Everyone has their own Chimera, something they try to achieve but never manage to find. For Arthur, the Chimera is his lost love, Beniamina; for his friends the grave robbers, it means hidden archaeological artefacts and easy wealth. In an adventurous journey between the living and the dead, forests and cities, celebrations and solitudes, Arthur challenges the invisible, even inside the earth, all in search of the elusive Chimera.
Mark says:
Director Alice Rohrwacher turns our world upside down, sometimes literally, depicting Arthur’s relentless search above and below ground. We enjoy the company of the tombaroli, the rowdy and disreputable band of grave robbers who rely on Arthur’s otherworldly vision; but will he be distract by their promise of wealth or by Italia, the new woman in his life? Nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival, La Chimera is a refreshing, cinematic treat.
Reviews:
“The film’s riches come from Rohrwacher’s seemingly inexhaustible wealth of ideas…” Wendy Ide, The Observer.
“Poetic, mischievous, perfectly formed. Half fairytale, half heist, the film is a chimera in its own right.” Milana Vujkov, Lola on Film.
“If you’re in the mood for something original and woozy and riotous and wonderfully special, you will be able to fill your boots.” Deborah Ross, The Spectator.
