200 miles, coast to coast, from sunrise to sunset, fuelled only by sandwiches, energy bars, cups of tea and good cheer, Chasing the Sun follows cyclists from all walks of life as they cross the country from the Thames estuary to Weston-super-Mare. The route takes them via central London, green country lanes and quaint villages, then climbing the Mendip hills and descending the breathtaking Cheddar Gorge. Along the journey the riders describe how the bicycle is a crucial part of their lives, for mental and physical wellbeing, community joy, the local school “bike bus” and tackling climate change.
The ride began in 2008, with 3 average cyclists on an adventure; the 2025 event has over 1200 riders signed up…

Mark says:
From dawn to dusk, three friends embarked on an epic journey across unknown lands. Navigating huge cities, endless hills and deep gorges, they battled the enemy and the elements, piloting extraordinary machines, to reach their goal, against the odds.
Sounds familiar, like the outline of any sci-fi space adventure or that fantasy tale in Middle Earth…
Chasing the Sun has all these elements, but now hundreds of riders take on their magnificent quest, to cycle from one side of the country to the other, before it gets dark. And their extraordinary machine? Why, the humble bicycle. Back in 1973, Vance Tucker, a Professor of Zoology at Duke University in North Carolina, conducted an experiment to determine the most energy-efficient creature on Earth. His research concluded that it was a human on a bicycle.

Reviews:
‘’Inspiring and joyful, a love letter to the humble bicycle and all who ride one.” James Spender, (5 stars) Cyclist Magazine

Inspiring and very enjoyable! A pinch of astrophysics with a host of endearing characters.” Jeremy Vine, Broadcaster and Cycling Champion

What could be a more elemental, powerful or pure experience than taking the longest day and tracking the movement of the sun by bicycle. I think it is a great way to put things into perspective.” Olly Moore, co-founder of Chase the Sun ride.
